About Us

Salford Lions are the University’s women’s rugby union team. We aim to not only improve your sportsmanship and enable you to become competent on the field, but to enhance the university experience and allow you to create lasting friendships.

As a team we have participated in numerous competitions outside of our BUCS league, winning our varsity game against Chester and meeting Jonny Wilkinson and Sarah Hunter at the O2 Touch tour 2015. Being rugby girls we attend a lot of the University events such as Rec Night, charity and seasonal events, however we regularly hold out own socials, these range from club nights to movie nights.

The majority of our girls are on different courses, however, our strong team bond means a lot of us go to the gym, study and socialise together. Rugby is a good stress release and we are a fun-filled, inclusive society that welcomes all abilities. Most of our girls have never touched a rugby ball prior to starting, but by our first game, everyone is able to play safely with continuous development each week. We ensure every player gets game time and also have connections to external clubs such as Eccles ladies, where more training and game time is offered.

Remember, you don't have to pay membership before you attend, your first session is ALWAYS free and you can join at ANY point in the year!

Becoming a member of Salford women’s Rugby Union, you will be given the opportunity to partake in courses that will enhance your rugby knowledge and add to your CV. The offered courses include Scrum Factory and Level two coaching qualifications, and much more.

Last year we took part in the Tough Mudder half in the West Midlands, within the Belvoir Castle Grounds, with beautiful scenery and plenty of mud. As this was such a success for the girls that took part, we are already planning our next obstacle Race!

As quite a celebratory team, we look forward to celebrating any events that our members want to, we organise a traditional Christmas meal, New Year parties, thanksgiving feasts, a Halloween event, and bonfire night together. We also attend the Holi festival of colour organised by the university.

Excursions for the club include a trip abroad to play rugby and socialise with other women’s rugby teams from other universities across the UK and other societies from Salford. Tour is an action packed week away, with quality friends and numerous tasks and activities organised by the society itself. This once in a lifetime opportunity (or as many as you like) is offered to all members and alumni. With links to other societies we also attend their events.

After training sessions we can arrange for food to be provided, which the girls enjoyed after training previously. After games we also hold celebratory drinks and praise all players for their success on the pitch!

We are an open-minded, mixed ability, idea welcoming team.
