Why I've LOVED volunteering with Rafiki! 🫶

When starting off University, I wasn't aware of how many opportunities were available for me that I could engage with while I am studying. I have found there were uncountable opportunities that I can be a part of it as a student through Rafiki peer support service.


Why become a Rafiki Volunteer?

Joining the Rafiki volunteering group has taught me a lot and opened many doors to many opportunities. During volunteering there are many skills that can be gained, the list of skills are communication, teamwork, involve in events, supporting others, showing empathy and sympathy to others as well as meeting different people and being part of a community.


How did I manage it with my studies?

The volunteering with Rafiki is very flexible. I get to choose my own time to work that suit best for me and there was no problem with taking time off as the SU respect that my studies always comes first! 


What benefits have I gained from volunteering with Rafiki? 

Volunteering with Rafiki I've really grown in confidence! Through developing my communication, teamwork, leadership and time management, I can now manage my work better and feel more confidence with my academic studies.


What have I achieved from this volunteering?

Volunteering with Rafiki I had got the chance to move to the next stage of supervisor position, I get paid for this position which helped me a lot during the cost-of-living crisis. I have had the opportunity to lead a team, manage wellbeing events and take part in a leadership training workshop. I even developed the skills and confidence to run as a candidate in the NUS elections.

The biggest achievement that I got from volunteer training and working as a Rafiki volunteer and supervisor is my NHS Placement. Rafiki helped me through the questions of an NHS interview. The panel were really impressed by my Rafiki volunteering experience and I was able to secure a long-term placement in Salford Royal Hospital as a volunteer which is helping me towards my career.


What Rafiki volunteering have added to my CV?

The Rafiki volunteering has added a long list of new skills to my CV, such as teamwork, communication, leadership, time management, hosting events, leading a team and supporting others. Rafiki has also helped me to develop soft skills such as managing my studies, talking to new people, understanding responsibilities as well as showing empathy and sympathy to fellow students.


Why I love being part of Rafiki?

I love getting involved in new activities and getting to meet new people. Being part of Rafiki, I get to experience a wide range of opportunities that I have an interest in and support my studies and career. I feel passionate about supporting people and enjoy every minute of helping people through Rafiki!
