You’ve just arrived at uni, you’ve moved in to your new flat and are enjoying all the excitement of Welcome... now it’s time to stop and take breather!

According to a survey by NUS, 78% of students said they experienced mental health issues last year. Everyone tells you that university is the best time of your life and it probably will be. But it’s important to take care of yourself. Audre Lorde said “caring for myself is not self-indulgence, it is self-preservation, and that is an act of political warfare.” It takes strength and willpower to step back and take some time out but it’s so worth it.

Taking part in craft activities is both rewarding and relaxing. It’s challenging, but not to the extent that it leaves you mentally exhausted which makes it great for combatting stress. It also helps in the development of hand-eye coordination, spatial awareness and problem solving. Crafting in a group is a good mindfulness technique; it gives you a sense of pride and achievement, teaches you patience and perseverance and it’s a great opportunity to meet new people.

But aside from that, you’ve probably just moved into a new bedroom and those bare white walls could do with some decorations.

So take a break from the hectic Welcome schedule and drop in between 2pm and 4pm on Tuesday 20th at University House and on Thursday 22nd in the Allerton Building to make bunting, pompoms and garlands as well as anything else you can think to make with our craft supplies!
