Today's guest blog is from Journalism student, Lauren Smith, who is a member of the USSU Swimming Club.

Taking part in sport has allowed me to achieve a better wellbeing. It helps me to be more active and keeps me fit and so generally if I look good, I feel good.

I mostly enjoy sport for the social factor. By taking part in a team sport like swimming, I am surrounded by like-minded people who all have the same interest as me. It has allowed me to gain friends I wouldn’t otherwise have met and boosted my confidence.

It also helps me to get away from the stress of my studies. When it comes to university deadlines, I am constantly thinking about what work I have to complete, so by taking 30 minutes to an hour out of revision by taking part in sport, my mind is distracted. I feel a lot more relaxed and optimistic after exercising and so can go back to studying with a fresh outlook.

I have also noticed that on the days I take part in sport I am more tired when it comes to going to bed, and so I sleep better at night. By having a better quality of sleep, I feel my mood is more positive the next day and I am able to concentrate easier and am more motivated.

Swimming Club’s training sessions are on Mondays and Wednesdays. Join their Facebook group here for more details.
