In a fantastic gesture, Our Indian Society has recently donated enough money to sponsor 3 Indian girls through their education for one year, through UK registered charity The Mahindra Foundation’s Project Nanhi Kali.

“Project 'Nanhi Kali' (meaning little bud in our national language, Hindi) has been working on empowering girls through education for the past 18 years and currently reaches out to almost 100,000 girls from underprivileged communities in 9 states across India. The project ensures access to quality education by providing academic support, material support like books, shoes, uniforms and stationery, and social support that sensitises parents and the community on gender equality and the importance of education.”

We quickly caught up with Tanmay Barhale, member of the Indian Society:

“When I formed the Indian Society at Salford the idea was to help Indian students and to promote Indian culture at Salford. Last year the committee decided to help a social cause as part of their annual plan.

The idea for donating the money (raised through the Holi event) to a charity came through a discussion that I had with the committee members present at that time. I suggested a couple of charities to the committee members and we put a comment about it on the actual Facebook event page.

I also discussed with the committee members (Mayur and Prash) about donating the money to Nanhi Kali as I had worked for Nanhi Kali foundation before when I was in India.”
