On 1st August 2016 we started moving to a new way of making democratic decisions within the Union. This new structure has been designed to give you more control over how decisions are made. One of the key features is a new ‘Union Council’ and ‘student executives’ with greatly increased powers to hold sabbatical officers and other student representatives accountable and also, importantly, to exercise control over budgets for student activity groups, sports clubs and representatives.
These new executives will give students control over the running of activities and budget for specific areas. This already happens for our sport and activity groups and it’s being formalised and rolled out to more areas of the union.
The five executives are:
Each executive will be led by a student elected in October to a new voluntary position leading the executive, more details on this will follow.
In the meantime we are looking for student volunteers to take part in these areas and help the Union to set up these groups. We need enthusiastic students who want to make a difference to students’ lives at Salford. You'll also gain valuable skills to help you find a job in the future. If this sounds like you please register your interest here http://www.salfordstudents.com/democracy/takepart
The students elected to lead the new executives will form part of a new Union Council which will also be made up of the sabbatical officers, volunteers from the executives and randomly selected students. The Union Council will be the ultimate democratic decision making body of the Union and will control budgets for each executive and hold student representatives accountable.
This is an exciting time for democracy here at Salford, all we need now is you to get involved and participate to make it work!
