Salford Sport is on the up…

Monday 16-03-2015 - 16:11

In terms of sport this has been the Students’ Unions most successful year in its history. We have seen the highest ever number of students signed up to sports teams – we have finally hit the 1000 members mark. As well as sitting at our highest point in the BUCS (British University College Sport) table at 80th.

In student sport March is the month when promotions are secured and relegations are hopefully avoided. For Salford we have been many more promotions than relegations. Teams that have already won their BUCS Northern Leagues are:

  • Womens Basketball 1st
  • Mens Basketball 1st
  • Mens Football 1st
  • Womens Hockey 1st
  • Mens Hockey 1st
  • Netball 1st

As well as winning their league Mens Basketball 1st are in the BUCS Trophy Final on the 24th March playing University West England in Loughborough. As well as the finals they are also in the play-off for promotion into the BUCS Premier League versus Edinburgh or Sheffield Hallam and Derby University at the end of April – what an excellent season they have had so far.

Another team that has had a great season are Futsal with both their 1st and 2nd teams competing in the BUCS Northern 1A finishing 2nd and 5th respectively.

In individual events Hannah Russell competed in and won the BUCS Women's 50m, 100m and 400m Free Disability in Sheffield last month as well as picking up the Top Disability Female award.

All these great results have gained Salford 244 BUCS points which leave us 80th in the BUCS Ranking. This is a great achievement seeing as last year was the first time we were ever in the top 100!

So why is Salford Sport on the up? Is it the extra funding USSU secured from both the University and Sport England to develop sport this year? Is it the move to David Lewis playing fields? Is it the hard work from all our committee members? We think it is all of the above and much more.
