Cup Finals

Rugby League: Salford 8 – 22 Northumbria

Salford Rugby League Club entered the game high in confidence, after an undefeated league campaign and advice from Salford Red Devils Director of Rugby Tim Sheens. Their opponents, Northumbria, were also top of their own league and proved to be a worthy opponent on the day. Despite a very closely fought game, Northumbria came out on top with a 22-8 win against a Salford team which gave everything it could.

Men's Volleyball: Salford 0 – 3 York

Salford Men's Volleyball club had already achieved a lot just making the final of the cup, after overcoming top of the league Manchester in the semi-final in an epic 5 set match which they won 3-2. Awaiting them in the final was a very talented York team who were undefeated in their own league this season. Unfortunately York’s size was just too much to deal with, Salford struggled to make any real dent in York’s defense. Salford will be disappointed not to have performed better, but the team can take solace in the fact they are the first Volleyball team in Salford history to reach the cup final.

Promotion and League Winners

Rugby League - North 2A League Winners

Despite losing out in the cup, Rugby League fought off UCLAN in the league to finish top of North 2A and earn promotion to North 1A for the first time in the clubs history. Salford sealed their promotion hopes with a comprehensive 42-4 win over Lancaster, finishing the year with 8 wins, one draw and one loss. Knowing this committed club, the preparation for going up to a much tougher league will already have started.

Women's Volleyball – North 2A League Winners

Despite playing their last match in mid-February, Salford had to wait until mid-March to find out if they would get promoted. Salford finished the league with 24 points, racking up a total of 8 wins and two losses. Their closest challengers were UCLAN, who had a number of games in hand which they finished up playing over the weekend of March 19th/20th. Fortunately for Salford, UCLAN lost their final game against Liverpool John Moores which handed Salford the title.

Women's Basketball – North 2A League Winners

Sometimes in sport an entire season comes down to one game. In this case, Salford were top of the league, with a talented Manchester 1st team hot on their heels in second place. The fixture fairies worked their magic and gave a blockbuster matchup on the last day of the season, with Salford travelling to the University of Manchester for a “Winner takes all” affair. A Salford team riddled with injuries managed to rise to the challenge, clinching the league and promotion with a 76-50 win. Massive congratulations must go to the entire squad who have earned back to back promotions and gone undefeated in the league two seasons in a row. Special mention must go to Basketball scholar Martina Matejcikova who was the team’s captain, player and coach and was also their leading scorer in their win over Manchester.
