Rafiki Volunteer - Casual opportunity

Details Hide[-]

The Students' Union is looking for new volunteers to become part of our Rafiki peer support service. Any Salford students who would like someone to talk to, or if they are having some issues can come to Rafiki. Our volunteers listen to students and offer peer support as well as signposting to other support services.

Rafiki volunteers will facilitate wellbeing activities such as Film nights, arts and craft sessions and Coffee and Brew with your SU. During these events Rafiki volunteers listen to students and provide peer support, as well as signpost to support services. All our volunteers receive extensive training to help them fulfil the role.

This role is not professional; it is intended to provide peer to peer support only, and volunteers cannot provide advice to students. All volunteers will receive extensive training to enable them to fulfil the role, including wellbeing training and signposting training.

Training for this role will be Tuesday 24th January 4pm-6pm in Lewis Latimer (Northside)

Responsibilities:

  • Casual volunteering hours to suit you
  • Support the Rafiki team at onsite wellbeing events and activities
  • Even lead and run your own wellbeing activity
  • Provide peer to peer support for students attending Rafiki events
  • Signpost students to the relevant support services within the Students' Union, the University and externally.
  • Keep all issues raised confidential
  • Provide regular feedback to allow for impact measurement, and to enable the Students' Union to continually improve Rafiki for students.

What do you get out of it?

As well as helping other students, being a Rafiki volunteer is a fantastic opportunity to gain valuable experience and skills, such as:

  • active listening skills
  • communication and interpersonal skills
  • teamwork
  • confidence
  • time management
  • self-management

Volunteering will help to enhance your employability when you leave Salford. Rafiki volunteers also receive comprehensive training including Wellbeing training delivered by Samaritains as well as information about all the support services available for students, in order to direct students to the appropriate service when required.
