Stitched Up is a not-for-profit Community Benefit Society inspiring communities across Greater Manchester to take action on sustainable fashion.
We currently run a sustainable clothing hub in Stretford Mall – a space for crafters, makers and tinkerers, providing an alternative to the chain stores and empty shops of your average British high street. We also bring our workshops, events and projects to locations across Greater Manchester.
We’re always looking for passionate and enthusiastic volunteers to join our team. We need help with all sorts of things, from preparing for and assisting at workshops, to admin, marketing and general running of our HQ and reclaimed haberdashery and fabric shop. You don’t have to be able to sew to volunteer with us, but it does help if you share our passion for sustainable fashion!
About Clothes Swaps:
Our Clothes Swap allows people to refresh their wardrobes whilst being mindful of the planet. By keeping your clothes in use for an extra nine months – instead of buying new ones – you reduce their carbon, water and waste footprints by 20-30% and swapping is one great way to do this.
- Customers bring up to 10 items from their wardrobe that they no longer want.
- The items are graded into 'Great' (vintage and designer) and 'Good' (Highstreet), customers receive stamps for their items.
- They are then free to browse the rails and find their new wardrobe faves!
- If they don't find as much as they brought along, they can keep their stamp book for the next time and come and swap again.
About the Volunteer Opportunity:
We would LOVE you to come along and volunteer at our Clothes Swap at Underhall, Stretford Public Hall. We will need you lovely volunteers over two sessions to help set up, pack down and run the swaps smoothly. Buses 263, 255 and 256 come to Stretford from the city centre. From Chorlton you can catch the 84A or 150. The Stretford Metrolink stop is just opposite Stretford Public Hall.
Early Shift - 11:45am - 3pm: Early shifters will meet at the Stitched Up Stretford Mall Pop Up Shop and we'll head over to Stretford Public Hall together, it's just a few minutes' walk away. You will help us set up in the Underhall. We will be setting up rails, hanging and organising clothes, and getting accessories onto tables to make them all look lovely and swappable! The first swap session will run 1pm-2:30pm so you will also help us keep the space tidy as people are swapping and answer any questions customers might have. You will also help us reset for the second swap of the day.
Late Shift - 2:45pm - 6pm: You will close the show by helping us with our second swap of the day (3pm-4:30pm) by keeping the space and the clothes looking great. You will also be helping us sorting out the left-over clothes, packing down the rails and generally clearing the space so we can be out by the end of the day.
Clothes Swap shifts require a fair amount of heavy lifting and lugging things about. If you need any accommodations to be made, please get in touch before your shift.
As a thank you for volunteering at the Clothes Swap will receive a FREE TICKET for a future swap (unfortunately we won’t be able to accommodate personal swapping on the day as we expect things will be very busy!).
Minimum commitment level: One month
