Across the country sexual harrassment is rife on campuses. As our Union has a bar and a club night, it is highly likely that students can experience sexual harrassment or dates that have gone wrong in Atmosphere.
Many unions across the country, such as Sheffield Hallam, hold an 'Ask for Angela' scheme where if a student feels uncomfortable in any form, be it a date that is going wrong, or if they are being harrassed or groped, they can go to the bar and ask for Angela, this signals bar staff to the knowledge that thiey feel uncomfortable and need assistance, while being discreet and not highlighting to everyone around them the situation.
I propose that Salford SU implements this scheme to ensure that all students feel safe and comfortable within Atmosphere and can get out of an unwanted situation.
A Verry good recommendation Hatty. One of the primary functions of any SU or University should be to ensure the safety it’s students as far as it can do so both on and off campus. This recommendation helps all feel safer and gives them a way to get out and get help when in potentially hostile situations. I give this proposal my full support and encourage others to do the same.
Thank you Jamie! It means a lot to me that students feel as safe as they can within our Students’ Union and anything we can do to help that is important!
I think this is a fantastic idea - Obviously in an ideal world "Ask for Angela" would not exist, and I honestly hope no one ever has to use it. However, it is great that something like this exists, and I think that USSU should implement it for anyone that may get into such a situation where they need it.
