Welcome to Salford Snow- the University of Salford’s Ski and Snowboard society! We’re the biggest and best society on campus with over 100 members, and we pride ourselves in being a club for everyone.
Regardless of your ability to ski/board, we’re all about having a good time whether we’re at the indoor snow comes, hitting the dryslopes, cruising down the alps, out in town- even just chilling in the Students Union! There’s always something to get involved with and many friendly faces that’re (like you) just wanting to experience University life to its fullest.
No experience at all? No problem! A large amount of our members have never skied/boarded before, and it’s the perfect time to learn alongside your friends. We offer beginner lessons in the first semester which are purchasable with your ‘inspire’ yearly allowance- meaning it won’t cost you a penny.
What can you expect?
• Weekly training trips to Chill Factore and Graystone Action Sports
• Beginner lesson packages if you haven’t skied/boarded before
• Weekly themed social events- taking full advantage of Manchester’s stunning nightlife
• Annual Holiday to the mountains
• Amazing deals through our partners and sponsors
• Freestyle and Race training, preparing you to compete (if you wish to) on a National level representing the university.
• Major social events peppered throughout the year- including joint socials, formal meals, and much more!
Meetings: dates, times, and venues:
Throughout the year we host weekly trips to the Chill Factore, our nearest indoor slope. Due to Covid19 current restrictions these trips will be happening less frequently- however we are still aiming for bi-weekly trips. In addition to this, we host regular visits to the neighboring Graystone Action Sports Academy – an amazing, one of a kind freestyle training facility where you experiment, learn new skills and have fun before taking it to the snow. All just across the road from us.
The rough schedule for these trips will be to meet in the Students Union bar from 6pm onwards, where we will either travel by coach or minibus (included in membership fee) to Chill Factore, or walk across the road to Graystone Actionsports. These trips are the perfect way to practice, socialize, and most importantly have fun!
With them taking place on Thursday evenings this means they will not clash with other sport societies training sessions.
Socials are a core part in the rhythm of life at Salford Snow; these are a great way to socialize and meet new people, and range from club nights to more varied socials like trampoline parks and bowling and more! Unfortunately due to currently circumstances we cannot run them as large and frequent as previous years. But with that said, keep your eyes on our social media for updates on what we can do.
Throughout the whole year, we also have several big (Huge) socials- such as the Christmas meal, ‘REC nights’ (joint socials with every society), Pub Golf, and many more. These are some of the highlights of the year and are not ones to miss! There are plenty of opportunities to compete for the club and the university on a National Scale. We encourage anyone who wants to give it a go. It’s a great experience, especially if you are new to the competition scene.
As you may have already heard, joining a society at university is a great way to meet new people. It’s also a good way of getting to know students who already know what it’s like living in/around Manchester- who can show you the best places & help you out with your skiing/boarding too!
