Who are we?

Salford Comedy Society is a collective of comedy performers, writers, stand-ups, sketchers, improvers and general comedy fans based at the University of Salford. We aim to tailor our sessions to our members' aims but we'll practice anything from stand-up to sketch, from podcast to plays - you name it, we love it! This group was put together to share original comedic content, as well as paying tribute to the comedy greats. Salford has birthed many great comedians and we want to support the next generation of comedians to get them prepared for the industry.

Do I need to have any experience to join the Comedy Society?

We welcome all people who have a keen interest in comedy! Whether you've written the odd joke in your notes app, you're a known name on the circuit, or just want to try something new - we want to hear from you and bring you into our community. Being a part of the Salford Comedy Society will allow you to hone your skills, find your niche comedic voice and meet like-minded creatives!

Our plans for this year:

As already mentioned, we aim to tailour our sessions to our members, so if you let us know what you want, we will try to make it happen! Alongside this, we hope to engage in workshops in sessions and trips out to watch and perform on the Manchester circuit. As well as producing original content written and performed by our members, whether that be filmed and uploaded to our socials or compiled into a live showcase. Oh, and hopefully a few fun socials too!

What have you got to show for yourself, Salford Comedy Society?

Our members have historically gone on to be accepted into the University's SalFUNNI projects, which include a 2-week stint performing at the Edinburgh Fringe Festival. We have also performed at the Greater Manchester Fringe, at the New Adelphi Comedy Night, and numerous gigs around Manchester. You'll also find our members annually competing in the Chortle Student Comedy Awards, making it through to the semi-finals and finals!

Due to COVID over the past year few years much of our work has been produced and uploaded online, so if you want a taste check out our socials!

What's are the Committee's aims?

Our committee is dedicated to helping its members be prepared to go into the comedy industry. We are here to put on hilarious shows and organise events and opportunities for our members. Our committee is made up of School of Arts, Media and Creative Tech students, but don't feel like if you don't take these courses you can't join us! Salford Comedy Society is a small but mighty collective of comedians, so we can guarantee you and your comedic goals will be prioritised as a member. We understand that beyond the bright lights and laughing faces, performing comedy can be a daunting and isolating thing, so we are here to help you and support you in any way you need.

Get to know our committee on our social media!

"I'm not a member of the Committee, do my views still matter?"

Our members' views are what we consider most important to us. The committee bases their decisions on the opinions, views and suggestions raised by our members. We aim to tailour our sessions to what our members want to achieve and uphold a zero tolerence attitude towards any hate-speech, therefore our sessions are always a safe space. If you have any issues or queries, you can contact our Wellbeing Officer (or the committee member you feel comfortable talking to) by email or on social media. As a member of Salford Comedy Society, your voice will always be heard. At the end of each year, we host a vote where you can choose next year's committee members or even opt to run for a role yourself!
