While December is a time for feeling festive and reflecting on the year, we also recognise that it is also a month of assignment deadlines and exam revision. It's totally understandable to be overwhelmed by the workload during this time!

So to help out, here's our top 5 tips to manage stress during exam season:

1. Make a realistic revision schedule:

Students often make revision timetables. However, most of them don’t stick to their own schedules. The reason behind that is they tend to set unrealistic targets and then get overwhelmed when they are not met.

It is extremely important to make a revision plan according to the content, mark scheme, and time left for the exam. Starting early and planning smartly can lower the stress level significantly.

2. Don’t compare yourself:

Constant comparison to peers can cause anxiety, so while revising for your exams, try not to overthink about what others are doing or how behind you are. Remember, everyone has different abilities. Focus on your work and give your best.

We know it's easier said than done. However, putting extra pressure and compromising your mental health will only make your situation worse, so aim to do the very best you can do and no-one can ask for more.

3. Aim to get enough sleep:

We all know that pulling an all-nighter to revise before an exam is common. However, science suggests that poor sleep leads to lack of focus and productivity.

Try to spare at least 6 hours for sleep daily during exam season. When you are well rested, your body and mind work more efficiently and can help you to feel less stressed.

4. Diet and exercise:

Exercise feels like a bad idea when you are already stressed and exhausted. However, it is a proven stress-buster. When you exercise, endorphins (also known as happy hormones) fill your brain. That’s why you may feel more alert and relaxed after exercise!

If you don’t want to do any intense physical activity, a simple walk outside your study place can also help you in shifting your mind's focus from the exam stress.

Additionally, don’t ignore the importance of a balanced diet on your mental health and well-being. Hydrate yourself, consume less caffeine, and eat a balanced healthy diet to reduce stress and increase brain power.

5. Reach out:

Understand that you are not alone. There is a lot of support available to help students during the time of stress. If you are struggling academically, reach out to your lecturers or personal tutor.

You can also come to askUS for advice relevant to your circumstances. If you need someone to listen, you can chat with a Rafiki volunteer and book a one-to-one appointment with Rafiki service.

Finally, there are well-being areas in the Clifford library, SEE building and SU. Utilize these spaces to relax with your friends!
