Ah musical theatre, it’s a controversial one for sure, it’s an artform people love to hate but the West End has sell out performances every day and it’s impossible deny the impact of musical theatre on the world. So, if you are looking to experiment with the mysterious world of musicals or you want to expand your list of shows to perform in your kitchen then look no further here is our list of our favourite cast albums on Spotify.

Hamilton

We couldn’t have this list without Hamilton, this massive phenomenon won 11 Tony's the year it was released! Are you looking for a show that will simultaneously impress you with rap skills and teach you about the formation of the United States? Then this is the show for you, Lin Manuel Miranda’s masterpiece looks at the story of the founding fathers from the first whispers of revolution through to the creation of a brand new nation.

Recommended bops; Guns and Ships Daveed Diggs averages 6.3 words per second in this song making it one of the fastest Broadway songs in history (to put that into context Eminem’s Rap God averages at 4.28wps), The Schuyler Sisters AND PEGGY! The introduction of our female leads comes in the form of this absolute bop with the sisters on the hunt for a man at work

Dear Evan Hansen

A truly touching story looking men's mental health. The story follows Evan a teenager struggling with anxiety whose life completely changes when another boy kills himself and everyone thinks they were best friends. There are moments in this show that can be pretty tough, and Evan certainly makes some very bad choices but the overall message of hope that this show can leave you with is unparalleled.

Recommended bops; Sincerely Me As Evan attempts to fake emails between him and Connor to prove they were friends we watch as they struggle to write something that doesn’t make them sound super lame! You will be found I can’t really explain the feeling this song evokes, even if you don’t listen to the show I would recommend looking into this song, it is my go to pick me up for when I’m feeling a little low and need to remember that I’m not alone

Six

Divorced, beheaded and died, divorced, beheaded, survived. If you went to school in Britain that rhyme is probably etched onto your brain, but have you ever noticed how despite a huge amount of our early history classes looking at their marriages we were actually taught very little about the women who married Henry? In 2017 Six opened at the Edinburgh Fringe attempting to fix just that. Going to see this show or even just listening to the soundtrack feels like being at the greatest girl band concert of the 16th century. It’s not even that long you can listen to the whole show in 42 minutes and 27 seconds. So, what are you doing go listen to it!

Recommended bops; Six The title song comes at the very end and takes the realities of the wives lives and flips them around because let’s be honest, they never needed Henry. Haus of Holbein Llook it’s a weird one okay, but the German accents and fast paced corset lacing have left us with an absolute banger!

American Idiot

Yes, seriously there is a Green Day musical, and Green Day have actually been in it. If musical theatre isn’t for you maybe this will be. The show follows Johnny (the Jesus of suburbia) as he leaves home and discovers the bright lights of the city. Pop punk isn’t your classic musical theatre vibe and it leads to a pretty damn incredible show

Recommended bops; 21 Guns I mean really everything is a bop, it’s American idiot for goodness sake but 21 guns is sung by all the women in the show and their harmonies set it aside from the original in a truly incredible way American Idiot because I mean... come on!

Heathers

Are we gonna have a problem?! The cult classic movie has been given the musical theatre treatment and my god does it work. If you know nothing about Heathers, it’s kind of like mean girls only with more murder and a much higher age rating. If you are a fan of teenage angst and bitchy pranks this is a show for you.

Recommended bops; Candy store It’s Heathers, we couldn’t not recommend the absolute banger that the three Heathers whips out in act 1! Dead Girl Walking Veronica’s drunken trip into the cool new kids’ bedroom never fails to make me feel like I can take on the world so go chug some Mountain Dew and boot up Spotify

Come From Away

Did you know that when American airspace was closed after 9/11, the small town of Gander, Newfoundland took on 7000 new residents as 38 planes were forced to land there. Come From Away tells the incredible true story of the islanders and the ‘come from away’ as they attempt to make sense of this new world they are stepping into.

Recommended bops; Welcome to the rock I know it’s cliché to pick the opening song but this one is such an instant classic that I couldn’t resist. Me and the sky Captain Beverly Bass was the first female captain at American Airlines and her beautiful solo touches on the struggles she went through to get there

The Prom

When the cast of ‘Eleanor’ the Eleanor Roosevelt story are told they are too self involved they decide to do some ‘charity work’ by helping a teenager in Indiana who isn’t allowed to take a girl as her date to the prom. This show is equal parts ridiculous and heart warming, as the Broadway stars bumble their way through huge numbers and Emma is just trying to get through without making too much of a splash

Recommended bops; Dance with you This very sweet song reminds you that at the core of this is two teenage girls who just want to be accepted, this one never fails to make me feel all warm and fuzzy. It’s Time to Dance The finale number follows the gang working together to make sure they can build a prom for everyone, it’s fun, it’s exciting and it still makes me cry!
