Fighting for a fair wage

Fair wage

This time last year, we Salford students stood up and demanded the Living Wage for students who work in their Union. The campaign is being mobilised again this year to fight poverty on campus and demand that student voices are listened to.

The University of Salford this week will be celebrating their Living Wage accredited status, proudly being able to say that it is standing by staff, including our students, paying them the Living Wage of £9 per hour. This is despite age and despite the length of time being employed. The Students’ Union on the other hand cannot. Despite this, I’m determined to show that Salford Students’ Union ought to be adopting the Living Wage and standing by the students, who we so boldly claim to represent and put first above all.

I will be launching our campaign next week on the 17th September at the Student Leaders Conference here on Campus. It’s free to sign up, with lunch provided for free and tea and coffee served throughout the day. At the launch, we’ll be hearing more about the campaign and start to develop ideas that we will be collectively putting into practice to lobby the Board of Trustees and the CEO. As students, we decide the direction of the Students’ Union and have every right to be heard, therefore we need to mobilise and show solidarity with every student working in the bar, café, in our events team and on the front desk.
