Tom Doyle
Vice President Science & Technology
Why did you run for Sabbatical Officer?
I had been a Student Liaison Rep then a trustee the year after so I had seen the previous sabbs and the challenges they faced. I felt I would like the opportunity and could contribute a lot to the position.
What do you do when you’re not working at the Union?
I spend a lot of time on my fitness through ‘rigorous’ gym sessions and sports clubs though I tend to spend more time on the social side of it these days!! I also watch too many films and have recently acquired a ps3 though keep that a secret as I’d like to be a pro at fifa before I’m challenged!
What do you want to do after this year?
I have no idea really. Have many ambitions of travelling to all of the wonderful places in the world which regularly appear on tv, but to form an actual plan of where I’m going is being severely restricted by my bank balance. That’s mainly because I really want something off the regular tourist paths but I don’t really know whether that will be possible.
What big plans do you have for the Union?
With the rise in fees unfortunately (and disgracefully) coming to Higher Education it’s going to be important to make sure that the student experience is at a top level for our students. Enforcing those levels has to be a priority this year which should also benefit our current students. Further to this I have seen firsthand the positive impact the union can have on a student’s life, so I will be making sure that we are available to as many people as possible whilst getting those involved already to play a more major role in within our processes.
What is your favourite food?
My predecessor Jim said biscuits and I also have quite a passion for biscuits. I have to say food wise though my preference will always be Yorkshire puddings so long as there’s plenty of gravy involved and perhaps a Cumberland sausage. Would also have to say a Tiroler Grostl which is an Austrian dish which fills me up whenever I’m off skiing.
What would you do with one million pounds?
A great question. I’d probably be quite boring with it actually. I think rather than buying one or two things straight away I’d probably be a little bit smart and use it to upgrade my life over several years. Perhaps slip a year out or two in there to see the world and hit a couple of my life goals (maybe climb the Matterhorn or write a book). I really could go on for hours on this one so perhaps this should be a question that you ask if you see me about and we can have a good chat about it!
What is your favourite thing about the University of Salford?
I think it was actually the first time I visited the campus it very much felt like home whereas I visited other universities and they didn’t really appeal to me. That’s a large part down to those people involved in my visit it has to be said so thank you to them.
Why do they say that you’re so awesome?
Well I wouldn’t like to speculate but it’s very kind of you to say!
