Last week on April 13th Salford travelled to the University of Chester to compete in their first ever multi-sport varsity event. There were 20 total fixtures played, with over 300 Salford students competing all with a single unified goal, to beat Chester. If you weren’t lucky enough to attend, you can watch our highlights video below:

The weather couldn’t have been any better, with sunglasses and a little bit of sunburn on full display, everything was set for a fantastic day of sporting competition. Salford entered as the underdog, but started the day off well taking a 6-3 lead in the early fixtures. However, Chester came back in the afternoon and ended on top winning 8-12 overall. Special mentions are awarded to Men's Basketball who came back from a 15 point deficit and Women's Hockey who won their second game of the season against a Chester side who are two leagues above them in BUCS.

There were several other fantastic stories on the day, but the most important has to be the level of passion shown by the students of Salford, who didn’t stop chanting and supporting each other until they arrived back to Salford late Wednesday evening. Below are some quotes from Salford students reflecting on their Varsity experience:

“Great day and it was lovely to see Salford University so united!”

“An Unforgettable experience playing in front of a huge crowd for my final game for the University”

“One of my best away days I’ve been to for a while! #TeamSalford”

“Fun day out, brought different groups of students & sports together in a relaxed atmosphere”

“An experience you have to be part of”

We are immensely proud of all the hard work and training the teams put in to represent the University of Salford throughout the year. Varsity would not have happened without the commitment and determination from our students and our staff at the Students’ Union – history was made!

All that is left to say is let’s go Team Salford, we look forward to getting even with Chester next year.
