If you’re like me, you may have noticed a lot more politics in your Facebook newsfeed or on Twitter, or conversely if you're friends with me, you will have definitely noticed a lot more politics. Yes, that’s right, “The Great British Bake-off General Election 2015” has begun and it’s about high time we all starting taking notice because whatever the result is, it will affect you.

Young people (I’m talking people under the age of 35) and students are underrepresented in our political system because they just don’t vote. This means that political parties write their manifestos to appeal only to the people who vote - namely, older people. We need and want young people to vote en masse so that after the General Election in 2015 all parties will pay have to attention to what young people want and will rewrite their manifestos accordingly. This is our chance to be heard.

We at Salford Students’ Union will do our utmost to help you understand your rights as voters and help inform you of how policies might affect your life and your education. This will include running events and campaigns getting students registered to vote and engaging with their local candidates. Keep up to date with this on our Facebook page and events calendar on here.

Love a good list? Here’s my 'Voter Starter Pack' to get you up to speed:

1.Register to vote online. It will take you all of 4 minutes or less. Have your National Insurance number ready. https://www.gov.uk/register-to-vote

2.Find out who your MP is and see which party they belong to: http://www.parliament.uk/mps-lords-and-offices/mps/

3. Become knowledgeable about what each party wants to do if they get elected. Look at policies, not personalities: http://voteforpolicies.org.uk/

4. Check out how what your MP has been doing since they last got elected. Not happy with what they’ve voted for? Maybe you should vote for someone else: http://www.theyworkforyou.com/

5. Not from the UK? You might still be eligible to vote in the General Election this May. People from Commonwealth countries (including Fiji and Zimbabwe), British Overseas Territories, British Crown Dependencies, and Cyprus and Malta can all vote in a General Election.

6. Follow your favourite politicians and parties on Twitter and Facebook.

7. And finally for those of you who really want the “Full General Election Experience” why not join a political party and get involved in your own community? There's also the Student's Union elections!

Look forward to the coming months and if you want to talk politics, just find me. I'm in University House, top floor in the sabbatical offices or search for me on Facebook/Twitter.
