October is Black History Month

Thursday 09-10-2014 - 12:36

Black History Month seeks to promote knowledge and raise awareness about black cultural heritage; as well as honouring the positive contributions their communities have made to British Society.

Black History celebrations date back to 1926, when African-American historian Carter G. Woodson established a week dedicated to encourage the nation’s public schools to teach the history of American black people during February.

Black History Month is open to everyone’s participation and in the UK, educational events, including poetry slams, lectures, exhibitions and film marathons are usually run by local councils across the UK to this month.

October is an opportunity for Black communities to come together and pay tribute to their culture and historical achievements. At the University of Salford Students’ Union we are driven to continue to create such space for celebration.

We will be holding a series of events throughout this month including a Night of Talent where we will be displaying a range of performances from our gifted students at the University of Salford; as well as a movie night to sit back, relax and enjoy your choice of films at the Student Activities Space, featuring movies such as 12 years a slave.

Keep your eyes peeled for more information; we will be posting all the details on our Facebook and Twitter pages. You can see our scheduled events here.
