Conference floor reopened today with over 1,000 delegates reconvening in Liverpool for the second of three days of debates, policy, fringes and more.

Today’s focus was on the election of NUS’ next National President and five Vice Presidents who will serve in office for the upcoming year. We began with the election for the position of NUS National President in which Megan Dunn was elected, receiving a total of 413 votes.

The second round of elections saw Sorana Vieru, Shakira Martin and Shelly Asquith being elected into the positions of Vice President (Higher Education), Vice President (Further Education) and Vice President (Welfare), respectively. In the third and final round of officer elections, Piers Telemaque was re-elected Vice President Society & Citizenship and Richard Brooks was elected Vice President (Union Development).

In between the elections, conference heard from the International Trade Union Confederation’s General Secretary Sharan Burrow, who reiterated the importance of trade unions in ‘working together to organise and build power’, claiming that ‘workers and students have not had a friend in the current parliament’. You can watch Sharan’s speech in full below.

Elsewhere at Conference, delegates heard zone reports from the Welfare, Union Development and Society & Citizenship zones which were all passed. You can see which passed in each of the zones in more detail as they happened on our Twitter feed here.
