The University is sponsoring this year’s Shelagh Delaney Day – a celebration of the Salford dramatist and screenwriter – which falls on her birthday, 25 November.

Morrissey, lead singer of Manchester band The Smiths, cites Shelagh as being a great inspiration in his writing – and she features on the album cover of Louder Than Bombs

Shelagh was only 18 years old when she wrote the iconic and ground-breaking play, A Taste Of Honey. She went on to become associated with ‘kitchen sink realism’, winning awards for her screenplays and radio dramas.

There are a number of events scheduled to take place over the next week, including a first ever musical adaptation of Shelagh’s work, which has been commissioned by her daughter, Charlotte.

On Thursday 26 November, the University will host Digital Delaney @MediaCityUK – a production that combines elements of musical theatre, opera, concert and play. The performance takes place at 2pm in the Digital Performance Laboratory (DPL) at MediaCityUK. It will also be streamed live. Tickets cost £10, £8 concessions. You can also watch a video about the day here.

For more information on the events and to book tickets, visit the Shelagh Delaney Day website.
