The hawa project

There has been much media coverage over the past year about the refugee camps around Calais in Northern France. But one issue that hasn’t got much coverage is the lack of sanitary provisions for women. Some of our dedicated Salford Alumni have set up The Hawa Project to collect and distribute feminine hygiene care packages in the camps. This is what they have to say:

“We noticed the lack of attention and even ignorance of the issues faced by women who have been displaced via either war or other reasons. Menstruation has not been a major topic when it comes to aid so we devised this project. It is currently a smaller scale pilot project centered on the Calais camps. We will be collecting and putting together essentials pack (pads, sanitisers and wet wipes) that will be handed out.”

You can donate products such as menstrual pads, sanitary wipes and sanitising gel as well as underwear, washcloths and soap and hand them in at one of the drop off points on campus. These are located at the Info Point in University House and Newton Annex. You can also make a donation by purchasing off their Amazon wish list. Another option is to donate some money on the Just Giving page.

Have a look at The Hawa Project for more information and to keep up to date with campaign.
