Castle Irwell Sports Pitches move to David Lewis Playing Fields

A few months ago we let you know about the closure of Castle Irwell pitches in February. We have an update. The University and Council project work will start at the end of January but will not impact your scheduled fixtures. All fixtures in January will take place at Castle Irwell.

We will be in contact with Sports teams in the next few weeks to give them more details on game day logistics, nearer the time.

Alex Thorp, Vice President Science and Technology and former Salford football team member says “As part of the Universities plan to centralise itself, the closure of Castle Irwell is looming (June 2015) and the sports pitches will be moved to David Lewis as of September 2015.

“While this may be unpopular with students who love Irwell (including myself) it is necessary and clearly the way forward. The new accommodation overlooking Peel Park and David Lewis combined with a sports presence will turn Salford into a fantastic place to be, it will have a busy and campus feel almost immediately in September 2015.”

“I can assure concerned students that the Union and the University are working closely together to make the move as easy as possible, and to make sure all aspects are thought of.”

University grounds staff is currently working on the David Lewis playing field to ensure that these are in line with NGB pitch requirements, ready for February fixtures. BUCS have been informed and are happy with the progress to date.

As previously mentioned, the all-weather astro pitch will not be affected, so training and fixtures that usually take place there will continue to do so.
