Castle Irwell Pitches to Close in February

If a proposed scheme between the University and Salford council on land swapping goes ahead, the pitches at Castle Irwell will be out of use from February 2015. This is due to the Environment Agency (EA) plans to reduce flood risk by creating a flood basin nearby Castle Irwell Student Village.

We have been made aware of this intention and are working hard to ensure that any potential impacts on student sport will be minimised. We will adjust planned fixtures accordingly and inform any affected team for other arrangements. The EPA scheme will only impact the grass pitches, and not the Astro pitch where most teams train, and where USSU hockey play their fixtures. The changing facilities will remain open to accommodate those who will continue to use the astro pitch.

The University have told us “The proposed scheme will swap ownership of the Council owned David Lewis Playing fields, with the University’s Castle Irwell pitches. This would provide the Council with seven up to date, well-drained pitches at Castle Irwell with the University creating up to five pitches on the David Lewis Playing Fields, as well as improving the amenity value for the local community.

“This proposal will significantly enhance the sports facilities for our students. Not only will you get better quality pitches closer to the main campus and new student residences, but you will also get significantly upgraded facilities. The planning application for the flood works has been submitted with the works expected to start in January 2015.”

The University of Salford Students’ Union Student Activities officers are available if any students’ have any concerns. Please email StudentActivities-USSU@Salford.ac.uk.
