Naming rights competition! Open 16 – 19 May

We need to create two new names for our Bar and Café and we want you to be involved!

The new names can be completely unique to one another, or they can have synergy between them (as we have currently with Café Yours and Bar Yours.)

You can be as creative as you like, but please consider our diverse student community and the nature of our commercial venture.

The new names need to embrace the key findings of our student market research. In particular, reflecting food and giving a contemporary feel (for example ‘{insert name} Kitchen & Bar’ or ‘The Canteen’.) Read more on this below.

Naming rights prizes

If your submitted name is selected in our shortlist, you will win yourself a great food/drinks voucher (for use in September 2014) as well as ultimate bragging rights.

If your submitted name forms part of the winning design entry, you have the honour of receiving the first drink in our bar or hot drink in our café as well as a great food/drinks voucher. There will be publicity and photography featuring you along with our team and the winning designer.

Entries

It’s easy to enter! Just reply to our Facebook/Twitter statuses between now and Monday morning 11am with your ideas. We will be in touch on Monday afternoon to let you know if you’re our creative genius!

Please note: If you’d like to submit a design and logo entry as well, you can wait for more information on Monday afternoon to be released and submit your idea as part of the whole entry.

Judging

Suggested names will be shortlisted from the Facebook and Twitter entries, and given to our panel of experts. The shortlist of your names will then be given to students to use as part of the design and logo competition from Monday. More details on that design competition will be published on Monday on a design project webpage so check back on Monday afternoon.

Market research findings to guide your entries

Over the past 6 months we have carried out extensive research and gauged student opinion on Bar Yours and Café Yours, the University of Salford Students’ Union run café and bar in University House on the Peel campus.

In summary, you told us:

  • The bar needs to be more food focused - both in design and name
  • We need to improve perceived value for money through better quality dishes presented in a modern way
  • We need to include more fresh, homemade, healthier and less snacky choices
  • We need to use more ethically sourced, sustainable and local ingredients and reduce our carbon footprint
  • The activities and events need to be more student led and student focused
  • The café should always remain an alcohol free space
  • Open the café in the evenings and allow it to be used for society and club events and meetings
  • Reinforce the coffee shop influence
  • It needs to be more female friendly.

In terms of design

  • More modern, designed with a WOW factor – to make it unique to Salford and even Manchester.
  • More female friendly, lighter, cleaner and simple with a minimalist feel.
  • Iconic, contemporary but not date. It needs to be modern and trendy but not achingly so.
  • It needs to take influences from the Northern Quarter and independents business, not the large “Pub Co” brands.
  • It should reflect Salford’s heritage and uniqueness.
  • It should embrace the whole student community, and showcase the creative talents of its students.
  • Reflect the social space for sports, drinking, events, relaxing and eating.
